The Cost of Doing Business. The coming together of both the Headless Owl and You've Changed Records families. The culmination of a years worth of planning, scheming, re-tooling, and eventually booking plane tickets and crossing our fingers. We started the conversation about this show waaaaay back when Headless Owl was just a newborn label, barely out there in the world. At the time, we were still learning the ropes of being an independent canadian indie-label, and spent a good deal of time pestering Steve Lambke, he of You've Changed Records and Baby Eagle fame, about the various ins and outs of what we were doing. The idea came up of some kind of collaborative project. Perhaps a Baby Eagle/Burning Hell split album. Maybe an album wherein all the artists on our label (basically The Burning Hell at that point) would cover the artists on You've Changed. Maybe just some kind of elaborate fight to the death. we weren't sure what we wanted to do yet, but we knew we wanted to do something.
Flash forward 6 months or so. We formulate an insane plan. What if we got 4 or 5 artists from each label, flew them to the Yukon, had them spend 4 days in a studio recording an album of songs chosen specifically for the album, and then played two shows, one in Whitehorse, one in Dawson City. Those two shows wouldn't be just normal performances, they'd be showcases of a unique opportunity: a 10 way collaborative musical summit. We'd never heard of anything like it, and it would difficult to pull off. It was the perfect idea.
Many emails and skype dates later, here we are. We never promised anyone the world, and yet not once did any one person involved in this show ever hesitate. They were on board, excited, and ready to go. So, in early October, we will play host to 9 of Canada's best indie rock stars, and 1 incredible visual artist. Below this, you'll see the pictures of all the various artists, and each picture is a link to a primer, or hopefully a refresher course on all the amazing talent we have for you. And don't fret, if you don't live in the Yukon, you'll get your chance to hear the recorded album, and perhaps see some moving pictures of the show itself.
